I learned to cross stitch from my mom, who always had boxes of floss to be wound around paper bobbins when I was growing up. As an adult I picked the hobby back up as a meditative alternative to other kinds of art — cross stitch is just repeating X patterns over and over in different colors until a shape appears.

During quarantine, I've taught myself how to knit and crochet. A lot of skills from cross-stitch have carried over (sitting patiently, reading charts, buying too many things from the Michael's down the street) but it's made me appreciate hand-made objects even more.
